I moved from NY to CA in 09/2006. My question is about how to report bank interest income on the state income tax forms. Do I need to determine how much interest was earned from my bank accounts during the period when I lived in each state? I imagine that the interest income needs to be reported somewhere. Do I need to use my statements to figure out exactly how much was earned in each location?

My second mortgage is $150k. I understand that one can only deduct the interest paid on the first $100k. Is this correct, and if so, would it be reasonable for me to just leave off 1/3 of the interest, when making the deduction (for last year I made interest only payments)?

I bought a house about a year ago and I just recieved a form from the bank stating the amount of interest paid for the year. I found out that the bank is virtually reping us up. The interest taken for the year is five times the amount that goes towards the loan it self. Do you recieve anything back from this when filling taxes, or is there any way to go about it to reduce that big cake taken by the bank for no good reason?

We’re doing this in math class, and I keep getting it wrong. On the equation sheet is says I = Prt, but that’s only for simple interest. I tried that formula for compound interest too, but I kept getting the wrong answer.

Unless the answers at the back of the textbook are wrong. . . Again.

In the US, after the initial low interest rates a few years ago, why did interest rates rise which caused borrowers to default on their mortgage repayments?
Thanks Jason, but I’m interested in finding out why exactly did those interest rates fluctuate?

I live in CA and my wife lives in NJ. We have a joint account with a CA credit union. Now CA only taxes the interest of CA residents. Since my wife’s non-CA income also contributes to this interest, how should I split it for tax purposes?
